President Trump announced that in 45 days, it shall be illegal to engage in any transactions with Tencent:
Section 1. (a) The following actions shall be prohibited beginning 45 days after the date of this order, to the extent permitted under applicable law: any transaction that is related to WeChat by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. (a.k.a. Téngxùn Kònggǔ Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī), Shenzhen, China, or any subsidiary of that entity, as identified by the Secretary of Commerce (Secretary) under section 1(c) of this order.
It is worth noting as of 2011, Tencent purchased a controlling share of Riot Games, which is the developer of League of Legends. It is also worth noting that other news agencies are not reporting this as a ban on Tencent, but as a ban on WeChat and on TikTok. That these companies are oh so defensive of TikTok, and on WeChat, but not WeChat’s parent company Tencent, is very telling. Nothing to see here, folks.
